The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) will once again be hearing from opponents and proponents and the Proposed New Prosperity copper and gold mine by Taseko Mines Ltd (TML). This is after a proposal, determined by the company to be the environmentally friendly options, received a scathing review and was eventually rejected. If we are to take the company at their word, by their own standards the current proposal would be considered environmentally damaging than what was already rejected. The company new proposal was sent back by the CEAA twice due to the application being insufficient.

They have had three strikes and TML must be sent packing. This project must be rejected with prejudice in order to stop it from being constantly repackaged and brought back. TML is wasting public funds by bringing forward an inherently flawed proposal and continue to show a complete lack of respect to the Tsilhqot’in by not honoring the basic internationally adopted standards of obtaining Free Prior and Informed Consent from Indigenous peoples.

The project is adjacent to Teztan Biny (Fish Lake) and in the heart of a pristine watershed. The proposal threatens the entire watershed and Teztan Biny, ecosystems that the communities are dependent on and hold great historic and cultural significance for Tsilhqot’in communities. While the Minister of the Environment rejected the original proposal the Tsilhqot’in people have been very clear that they do not want this mine. The Tsilhqot’in National Government will also be at the Supreme Court of Canada on November 7th, 2013 for a Title Case for a claim area within which the mine is proposed.

The Tsilhqot’in National Government has made it very clear that they “will not back down”! On July 22nd please join them in Williams Lake as they stand united to protect the lands and waters.
