Idle No More organizers stand in solidarity with the family of Berta Cáceres, the Lenca people, and the people of Honduras.
Join us this Friday March 11th, 2016, as we call on the Canadian government to condemn her murder and demand they call on the Honduran government to support an independent, international investigation into Berta's vicious murder.
The award winning Indigenous Grassroots leader, Berta Cáceres was assassinated in her home in Honduras on Thursday, March 3rd.
Berta was an Indigenous Lenca woman and internationally recognized environmentalist who opposed hydroelectric and mining projects. Last year she was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, the highest international recognition for environmental activists.
Berta was also instrumental in leading protests against the 2009 coup that overthrew the democratically elected government in Honduras. Since the coup the human rights situation in Honduras has deteriorated as human rights defenders and social movement leaders are routinely killed and systematically criminalized.
Recently Canada implemented a Free Trade Agreement with Honduras despite opposition from civil society and labour organizations. The deal provided diplomatic and economic backing to an undemocratic government responsible for widespread human rights abuses, political violence that has generated massive inequality.
We will also be asking for freedom for Gustavo Castro Soto, Otros Mundos Coordinator. Gustavo was the sole witness to the assassination of Berta Cáceres and was injured during the attack. Now, the Honduran government is detaining Castro without cause and refusing him permission to return to his native Mexico.
We call on the Honduran authorities to immediately release Gustavo Castro Soto and to guarantee his safe return to Mexico.
Please send a letter to Honduran, Mexican and embassy authorities demanding security for Gustavo, and to halt the criminalization against COPINH by clicking on this link: Security for Gustavo, Justice for Berta
