JOHN COCHRANE FIRST NATION

Sub Office - 304D, 1401- 28th St. E., Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, S6V 6Z8 (306) 970-4453

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- JUNE 26, 2013

The Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People of Cumberland House will be holding a peaceful Sovereignty Summer Demonstration outside the Indian Affairs office in Prince Albert on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 starting at 11am. We will need singers and drummers. Every one is invited.

Since the signing of Indian treaties the Department of Indian Affairs has treated First Nations people with disrespect. The treaty relationship between First Nations people and the Canadian government has all been one sided.

Its not by accident that many First Nations are living in extreme poverty. It has been Ottawa's plan all along to take full control of our lands and resources and to keep us on welfare. They have done everything in their power to dismantle the Treaties and to not implement them properly. As a result, we have lost 98% of our lands to the newcomers. The very lands we used to look after our families and our communities.

The Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People (John Cochrane First Nation) of Cumberland House were party to Treaty #5 and have been waiting 139 Years for federal recognition of their Band. Its time that the federal government carry out its treaty obligations and finish its treaty business with the John Cochrane people.

If they don't, we will continue with our campaign with the social media and tell the rest of the world our story. We believe its time for Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People to start making noise and to start asserting their sovereignty with respect to their lands, and resources. As well, we must look after mother earth for future generations because the Creator gave us that responsibility.

As we speak, the provincial government is flooding the Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People's traditional territory in the Cumberland House area. Who gave them the authority to do so? and how come they didn't consult with leadership of the John Cochrane First Nation.

The impact of losing our lands and resources has been devastating. Research shows that 66% of First Nation children in Saskatchewan live in extreme poverty. This means that 2 out of 3 First Nation children in Saskatchewan live in poverty. Why? we live in one of the richest provinces in Canada.

As First Nations, we want quality of life for our children. Their dreams matter too. This can be achieved by honouring and respecting the Indian Treaties signed by our ancestors.

Yours truly,

Chief John Dorion,

Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People, John Cochrane First Nation
