On July 16th 2013 Idle No More along with KCAP and the Kingston and Quinte Citizens for Accountability are hosting a public rally and march for accountability of the Children's Aid Societies and the child protection industry.
Since 1960 Canada has actively committed a gross act of genocide on First Nations children and their families as defined by the Geneva Convention (article 2e) by removing 80% of First Nations children from their homes and placing them in non-native foster and adoptive homes. This act continues today with 50% of all children in care being First Nations. Earlier this year one of their local managers admitted that our local CAS still maintains these genocidal numbers at a conference on self-identification held at First Henry. Idle No More and our supporters demand that these acts of genocide end and that Canada and CAS admit to their acts of genocide and atone for them.
Contrary to popular belief, Children's Aid Societies in the province of Ontario are not government agencies but rather are private corporations that receive their funding based on the number of children in care and the number of files open on families. This funding model creates perverse incentives for these corporations to apprehend children from innocent families where there is no need of protection and place them into foster homes not for the best interest of the children but rather for their own financial and personal gains. Increasingly this process targets the poor and people of colour as well as First Nations families.
CAS treatment of all families is degrading, disrespectful, targets the poor and frequently abuses power. And so in addition to our call for their crimes if genocide on FNs we would also call for an ombudsman.
NOTE: there will be fliers and petitions on hand at the event.
