Got Land?

tenelle_starr.jpgWear the "Got Land? Thank an Indian" shirt and stand up for the truth about Canada's record on Indigenous rights

This week, Tenelle Starr, 13 years old and a member of the Star Blanket First Nation in Saskatchewan, was prevented by officials at her school near Regina from wearing a sweatshirt that read: "Got Land? Thank an Indian."

But Tenelle wore the shirt proudly because, in her words, "it's the truth. I think of it as a teaching tool that could help bring awareness to our treaty and land rights.”

Now and up to a January 28 Day of Action, Tenelle and Idle No More and Defenders of the Land are encouraging people across the country to wear this t-shirt to their schools, workplaces, or neighbourhoods to spark conversations about Canada's true record on Indigenous rights.

Buy a shirt where they're available. Download a stencil here and make your own. Hold a t-shirt making party and make dozens. Share them with your native and non-native friends. Upload a photo of you wearing the t-shirt here or upload the photo to instagram and use the hashtag #gotland

Hey I just want to say your bravery is impressive and inspiring. The story brought tears to my eyes as it broke my heart to imagine such negative reactions to your great initiative. I wish I could give you a hug and say thank you for the courage and pride demonstrated.

Definitely will make my own t-shirts to spread the word. I have a question though. If I sell any of them to friends, is there a way that I can send a portion of that to Tenelle to support what she is doing or to pay any legal fees she has to pay?

It is so amazing to hear of such a young child standing up for her rights. I’m from the U.S. and will spread this message. Our indigenous people are still going through so much and are still in the shadows. Thank you Telle.

I wanted to say Nia;wen Kowa to Tenelle, for being such a brave and honourable Spirit.

To wear a message that tells the truth about this Country. It would seem to me that most people today forget:this land did and does belong to The Native peoples.

If you own land in this country it was Native land taken away!

You owe it to be Honest and thank the rightful owners!!!

Tenelle, you inspire many by standing up and speaking out. You very much remind me of my niece, who is about your age. She is also Cree. Her mother is my adopted sister, a Cree from Saskatchewan , who was taken as part of the 60s scoop, which removed Indigenous children from their families and communities. She is now a strong Indigenous woman, as I know you are well on your way to becoming too. Keep up your good work to educate and fight for your rights.

I would definitely love to wear one of these pull overs with great pride. I would like to know where they are available. I have a few people who cannot afford one who would proudly wear one because they have also lost their land and have become homeless.
