BEES + SEEDS is a family friendly event timed with World Food Day to celebrate community-based agriculture that feeds more than 70% of people around the world. The event includes live music, educational opportunities, and more: www.beesandseedspdx.com
BEES + SEEDS pays special tribute to our pollinator friends, the bees, because without them we couldn't enjoy the variety of fruits and vegetables we eat.
And a Seed Swap salutes seed savers who are preserving our biological and cultural heritage.
BEES + SEEDS takes place in concert with several activities in October that include:
– World Food Day 2013 – The United Nation's theme this year is "Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition." A growing body of research demonstrates that what works to feed a growing global population and eliminate malnutrition is expansion of small farms controlled by local communities that practice sustainable agriculture.
– October is Non-GMO Month and BEES + SEEDS supports efforts to label foods that contain GMOs because consumers have an inalienable right to know what they buy and eat.
– Fortnight of Action – Vandana Shiva calls upon us to celebrate local food heroes and to act to prevent corporate control of seeds.
– March Against Monsanto takes place on the same day, Oct 12. In the spring, Portlanders marched to demonstrate that we were against the lack of transparency around GMOs and the increasing use of pesticides dictated by biotech's efforts to control the food supply. This fall, we demonstrate what we are for: healthy local food systems.
