Suoma Sámi Nuorat (Sámi Youth Organization) will organize a demonstration called Čáhppes ráidu on the 13th of March in order to urge Finnish Parliament to ratify ILO Convention n. 169 immediately. We want also show our disappointment with Finnish Parliament and its disrespect of Sámi law initiatives during last weeks. The demonstration will be held in Helsinki, capital of Finland.
We are living crucial times in Finnish history. On Saturday 14th of March, the Parliament will vote on the ratification of ILO 169. Earlier this week, the parliament voted against the Act on Sámi Parliament that was negotiated with Sámi parliament over three years. The new act would have respected Sámi right to define their membership and identitity. When voting against the act, the Parliament violated Sámi self-determination and seek to assimilate the Sámi to the majority.
The ratification of ILO 169 is still on the table. The fear among the Sámi however is, that the Parliament will vote against the ratification despite of the promises of the Government to support Sámi rights.
We ask the international community to support our struggle for our rights - the struggle that has been going on for more than 20 years - and spread the word about the Sámi situation in Finland.
