January 17, 2016 7:30pm Congregation Darchei Noam, 864 Sheppard Avenue West, Toronto, ON M3H 2T5 Contact: Andria Spindel aspindel@rogers.com 416-638-4783 Jacob Steinberg, will introduce the Jewish community of Suriname in South America. Our story will commence with the arrival of the first settlers in the old capital Torarica (1630s), then move on to the establishment and later decline of the Jodensavanne, an autonomous Jewish community that flourished in the jungle of the Amazon basin for almost two hundred years. We will end with a view of the Jewish community in Suriname as it is today. Jacob Steinberg, a multi-national consultant, has become part of the Surinamese Jewish community.
