1st Annual Orillia Memorial March for Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women

Idle No More is strongly in support of this event.

We are a local group of concerned First Nations women working together to advocate for all our women. We are thrilled to begin the planning of a First Annual Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women. This event will be held on February 14th, 2014, in the town of Orillia. We are also compiling a speaker’s list for the event and will be having a BBQ/Feast for everyone in attendance.

We are inviting everyone to Orillia to attend this event, as this on-going problem affects so many First Nations families on so many different levels. Our goal is to also raise awareness and educate people outside of our First Nations Territories of this problem our communities face regularly.

This is Joyce Carpenter. She will be speaking at the event in Toronto, as well as making her way to Orillia in the afternoon to speak in Orillia. It has taken her 21 years to speak out in this capacity. This is her voice, her words and her and her families shared pain of loss Our Women are 7 times more likely to be murdered. This issue that our women face is unthinkable, however many of us live everyday with the loss of a loved one who is cherished by each and everyone one in her family. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2014/02/13/strawberry_ceremony_to_honour_aboriginal_women_missing_or_murdered.html

CALLING OUT FOR HANDDRUMMERS & SINGERS TO JOIN US ON FRIDAY Just want to remind people that this event will start at 4pm, there is no NDN time for this event. We have speakers who have other places to be and we want to respect that. We ask Women to please remember to bring and wear their skirts. We encourage people to bring their Natural Asemaa (Tobacco), as we will have a Sacred Fire during the duration of our event. As as always we ask that we all remain respectful and courteous to each other as we gather together to Honour the Grandmothers, Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Aunties, Grand daughters, Nieces and cousins taken from us so tragically. Please advise us in advance if you have any food allergies or disabilities we should be aware of. We also encourage all of our guests to bring your own plates, bowls and utensils for the feast. Also some slippers or moccasins as we ask our guests to remove their outside footwear in the Orillia Native Women Group's building they have generously donated for use during this event.
